Kind to the Forest

Aziz is nineteen and lives in Ain Draham, a mountain town famous for its cork oak forests. Two years ago, he created a small eco-tourism service with three friends who love nature. They guide visitors on long walks through the forest and teach them how to protect it.

“Tourists who come here should respect a few simple rules,” Aziz explains. “They must not light fires, and they ought to take their rubbish back with them. A single cigarette may start a fire that destroys hundreds of trees.” Since they started, the friends have organised more than eighty walks and have planted five hundred young trees.

Booking is easy: visitors fill in a form on the group’s website, and Aziz answers every message the same day. “Online booking has changed everything,” he says. “If a family books today, we will be ready for them tomorrow.” Most visitors travel by bus or share a car, which reduces pollution.

This year, the group won a regional prize for young entrepreneurs. Aziz has used the money to buy a small electric van. “Nature has given us so much,” he says. “It’s our turn to give something back.”

Writing: advice to a tourist

writing and self-assessment

A British tourist, Mr Brown, wants to visit your region next summer.

Task: write him a short letter of 8 to 10 lines. Tell him what he should see, how he can travel, and what he must not do to protect nature.

Steps
  1. I read the task and underline: who I write to, the topic, the length, the type of text.
  2. I list my ideas, then I put them in order: introduction, two or three points, conclusion.
  3. I write my draft with linking words (first, then, because, while, so, finally).
  4. I check with the checklist: grammar of the module, spelling, capital letters, full stops.

Dear Mr Brown,

Thank you for your letter. I am very happy that you want to visit Bizerte next summer. First, you should see the old port, which is full of colourful boats, and the Spanish fort above it. You ought to visit Lake Ichkeul too: thousands of birds stop there in winter and spring. To travel, you can take the train from Tunis or rent a bike in town, which is cheap and good for the environment. Please remember a few rules: you must not leave rubbish on the beach, and you must not pick plants in the national park. If you come in July, I will be your guide for a day!

Best wishes,
Yassine

One good example among many: compare, don’t copy.
